book 2 sleeping and being awake paragraph 12

If the sleeping man thinks without knowing it, the sleeping and waking man are two persons.

Locke is saying that the soul is another person apart from the person itself. If we are sleeping and we are unconcious of the fact that we are dreaming or thinking while asleep is because the soul leaves the body and thinks else where. How else can we explain the idea of thinking while sleeping and not knowing it? "The soul thinks and perceives while sleeping."

In a way i kind of agree with Locke. If the soul is this thinking thing while sleeping, then why we cannot remember or be aware that we are thinking? I think that in this case our soul does leave the body to think else where, perhaps another body. Like Locke says in his example of Castor and Pollux, we have the body of two men with one soul between them. The soul thinks apart what the man is not conscious of.

I dont agree with Locke becuase how can we be two different people? The fact that we can't ALWAYS remember of what happened during our sleep doesnt mean whe dont know because our souls has left the body. The reason i feel like this is because sometimes we are able to remeber a dream, so does that make the body and mind be together that night? I just cant see how we can be two people at one time and when we wake up we go to our usual self??? Any suggestions

jasmine, i think he means it in a figure of speech type of way rather than a litteral sense. the whole point he is trying to make in my opinion is that when the man is not conscious when he is in the state of sleeping is because the soul has left the body to think else where which is why at times we cant remember what we dreamt. i understand where your coming from, i would have to say that yes when we are conscious of our dreams is because the soul has not left the body. it's very confusing. in a way i do agree with locke when he says the sleeping man and the awaken man are two different people. i guess before we wake up the soul comes back to its body.

i agree with jasmin i dont agree with Locke saying that there are two different people. I only know that when we are sleeping and have dreams are actually thinks that we want do when we are awake, but we are too afraid of doing things and probably thats why we dream about it!!!

I think that our true feelings, our true morals, values, and deepest, most sacred thoughts is what makes up our souls. It is who we truly are as a human being. our brain, and body are who we HAVE to be in order to carry out the standards for being a decent human being. For example, a person who acts tough and bullies someone around may not truley want to be that way, but since he or she is afraid that people will think they are weak, they do it. But deep down in their soul they are a sweet, caring person.

THis is relative to having two parts of oursevles while we are awake and sleeping. Maybe while we are sleeping our intellectual and functional brain is "shut off", and our souls cruise our mind and body and takes hold of all our subconscious thoughts and feelings. This, of course,is considered the act of dreaming. But once we awake, our soul rests within and all those hidden feelings that person has throughout the day are shoved away into the soul until it is time to sleep again.

I strongly agree with Locke's statement that " the sleeping and waking man are two persons".
