hume: of the origin of ideas; perception of the mind

In this section, Hume distinguishes the difference between impressions and ideas. Impressions are vivid acts that one feels at the happening of it while ideas are thoughts or beliefs based on these impressions. He clearly states that the two are very different from each other.

"If you tell me, that any person is in love, i easily understand your meaning, and form a just conception of his situation; but never can mistake that conception for the real disorders and agitations of the passion."

Basically what Hume is trying to say is that he may understand the person but he doesnt know what it feels to be in love. When we remember our old memories, we have an idea of the experience we went through but we cannot feel the same way as we did then because the memory is faded and it is no longer an impression but just a mere thought of what happened then.

I agree with Hume on the difference between impressions and ideas. The way we feel at the moment of a situation is not the same feeling we feel as little as 30 min. after the fact.

I totally agree on what you are saying here. It actually helps me understand more on what I blogged about. Makes a lot more sense the way you put it. Hume is saying that are impressions are when its exactly happening, and our ideas are after it has already happened where we cant feel the same way we did when it was actually happening. Are feelings are always different then when it is happening right then and there, so therefore it is no longer an impression but an idea.

I agree with you and Hume. I did not think of that. I did not reall y pay attention to the difference between impressions and ideas. I think that a person can understand how a peron feels about a certain situation but only if they have already experienced it for themselves. A person can understand what that person is going through but they can not know what it feels like if they have never experinced it and even then the feeling is kind of faded because it has been a while since it has happened.

You can tell a person about your feelings but they never can actually feel what you're feeling.

I also agree with what you're saying. You can remember how you use to feel a month ago but you can't just make yourself feel that way again.

I think that noone can say that they know how someone else is feeling even if thy been through the same. you may have an idea but not aware of the actual feelings of that person

I agree, because feeling change over time, they fade away, and sometimes you thought about your ideas and compromise with others, so impression of the same idea will change!
