To go into further detail about how Rene Descartes feels about God, he mentions that the body has a soul. He believes in the afterlife, and that after someone dies, the soul moves on and leaves the body. The soul is therefore immortal, and cannot die.

i do agree with Descartes when he says that the souls are immortal and do not die. i'm not such a religious person but i do believe that there is a god and that there is such a thing as an afterlife. the human body may die physically but not spiritualy. after one dies their soul remains alive. if one soul was not immortal, then what's the purpose of having a heaven. many can argue that we remain alive in the presence of god and therefore heaven is our home after death.
I agree that Descartes does talk exstenively about God through out the book. But I think that his belief in God and the afterlife is a bit contradictory. He goes on and on about science and looking for truth through reason. But this is in compleat contradiction to the belief of a higher being. This seems to be the problem whith Decartes.
I agree with Dan's post about people having souls and having an afterlife, but Nick how can you say that the statement that Descarte made is contradictory, even though he says that science is reason through truth he still quotes God being part of the science, real reason and truth.
I believe that our souls are immortal because if they werent then why do people pray when you die. I also agree that there is life after death and thats were our souls go and rest. For example, we pray for our loved ones who passed away to watch over us, but if their souls were dead then who are we asking?
i totally agree with francinia and jasmin on the afterlife and how ones soul lives on forever, because if they didnt, we wouldnt be praying for our loved ones who have passed, or people that are almost on the road to heaven. we also wouldnt be believing in ghosts and haunted spirits because if a soul didnt live on forever, there wouldnt be any reason to believe in ghosts or a heaven.
Francinia couldnt have put it any better and i totally agree with her. If there was no afterlife and you just die and thats it, why do we always talk about going to heaven and praying for the dead? Yea, once we die, people can no longer see us or talk to us, but we are still there spiritualy and we are still prayed for. And melissa, you are also right. Why are there always such scary movies out dealing with ghosts and haunted spirits if your life just ends after you pass away?
