This quote ties to God and how he has the superior power of all. In this statement, Descartes says that we can't over power God because his power is the most powerful and clever. Although we may not have his power, we do have the power to agree with what is false. Even though many of us are deceived everyday in many different ways, we do not know the truth to everything, but one thing we should know is how to distinguish between truth and false.
I agree with Descartes when he says that we have the power of knowing whats false because like he says, there are just some things that no matter if we are awake or asleep, we know that they are true, For example, like i posted earlier, 2 + 2 = 4 and a square only has 4 sides. Things as simple as that we know are not false and we can prove it. It's not something that we need science for, these are things that are logic and are the way they are because thats how it was meant to be.
"...lest this deceiver, however powerful, however clever he may be, have any effect on me."
No matter how we are deceived, we should never let that affect us.

Hey i agree with what you are saying, you actually put it very simple to understand Decartes. What i don't agree is if Decartes things god has the superior power of all, than why does he has doubts and does not really belive in god? He is always questioning himself and by questioning himself isn't he doubting god? I agree with decartes when he says there are somethings that no matter if we are awake or sleep, we know are true. These are things that are logic. He should always keep this attitude and not doubt himself.
i agree with you that 2+2 is always going to be 4
and we should know the difference between true and false.
But most peope, morally don't, they tend to have different point of view. For example, is it really wrong for a mother to pull the plog on her daughter if there is no way to save her, and the daughter will suffer pain for her entire life.
i know that Decarte's point on True and False, but i just think there are more question out there that can be true or false in a diff senses than just 2+2=4.
descartes is very difficult to understand at times. there are so many questions that we can come up with but who knows the answer to them? does descartes if know his own answers to his own questions and theories? coming up with questions is pretty easy, answering them is whats hard. maybe thats why he has so many question regarding the truth that some just cant be answered which then turns into doubt. i dont know, its what i think. also maybe thats why he believes that god has the superior power of all.
Descartes likes to impose his belief that God is a real person. I don't agree with that we have no power over god. I believe that no one has a high enough power to take over the destiny of a person. People make their own choices in life.
